Great Barrier Reef Restoration Symposium
16-19 July 2018 | Pullman Reef Hotel Casino | Cairns Australia

Early Bird Registrations will close 15 June  2018 (AEST)

Coral reefs around the world are in danger. As the Great Barrier Reef continues to degrade through repeated mass bleaching events, crown-of-thorns starfish and the impacts of intense cyclones, pressure is growing for direct intervention to assist its recovery.

Positive actions are being taken internationally and novel interventions and management actions are being considered in Australia.  However, options for undertaking active preventative, mitigative and restorative interventions are generally limited.  This is partly due to a limited history and experience with such interventions.  Additionally, the advent of new technologies opens up a world of possibilities to utilise novel, not previously considered interventions to protect the world’s coral reefs.

2018 is the International Year of the Reef and this conference is aimed at bringing restoration practitioners, marine scientists, environmental managers, NGO’s and industry partners together to share ideas, with an open mind as to what might be possible to assist the recovery of the Great Barrier Reef.  This includes approaches currently being trialled anywhere in the world, and novel approaches that may be still in development.  The conference will cover the range from smaller, local-scale, to large-scale approaches, including engineering and oceanographic manipulations.  We are encouraging participation from a wide range of disciplines, including those not normally associated with coral reef research.  In addition, we will be featuring invited restoration approaches from other marine ecosystems as comparisons for what can be achieved.
