
Dry Tropics Plant Identification Short Course 2021
Presented by the Australian Tropical Herbarium, this plant identification short course will be held at James Cook University Townsville Bebegu Yumba Campus on 20-21 July 2021. The course will run 0830 – 1600hrs, and be held at the Science Place, Building 142, Rooms 101A/B.

Course content
The course will focus on flora of the Townsville region, using the Australian Tropical Herbarium’s Australian Tropical Rainforest Plants Identification System (the “Rainforest Key”) and Betsy Jackes’ Plants of Magnetic Island as principal resources. The modified course would be structured as follows:
Day 1
- Use of scientific names
- Ethical collecting
- Plant morphology - review of terminology
- Bush/garden walk to discuss classroom content; collection of plants samples
- Practice using Plants of Magnetic Island
Day 2
- How to press and document a herbarium specimen
- Plant morphology - review of basic bark, flower and fruit characters used in the Rainforest Key
- Bush/garden walk to reinforce classroom content
- Practice using the Rainforest Key
- Informal test
